READING ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO WITH YOUR CHILD

Helping Your Child With Reading Comprehension (I):

As you read with your child, stop occasionally and ask questions. For example, on one page, you might read, “The mouse saw the cat hiding under the table.”  Immediately after you read that page, ask your child, “What did the mouse see?  Where was it hiding?”  Many children do not focus on details.  By asking questions, you will be helping them develop the habit of listening closely.

If your child is having difficulty remembering details, try slowing your rate of reading and give your child more time to look at the pictures and think about what she is hearing.

Many children who become confused when hearing a story will not stop the reader to ask questions.  Train your child to stop you if they are not sure what is going on.  They might say, “I didn’t understand this last part.  Can you read it again?” 

Hint: Don’t stop too frequently or it may become boring.
