A TUTORING CERTIFICATE FOR PARENTS VOLUNTEERS AND OTHER COMMUNITY TUTORS
Parents at Rose Avenue Junior Public School represent over 67 different cultures. They are most likely well educated newcomers who will call St. James Town home for less than five years before establishing themselves in other parts of the city and province. They are parents who are committed to their children's success. They clamor for more information about their child and learn quickly how to navigate this new reality.
There is also, an important number for whom educational practices are built on cultures based on the authority of its institutions and who have been raised and understand only education methods which are different from those used in Canada. They hesitate to confront or even approach teachers and principals.
The goal of our Tutoring Certificate is to develop community capability: the knowledge and skills needed to support parents, volunteers and other community tutors in a multicultural community to assist children towards success at Rose Avenue Junior Public School.
We propose to develop a core group of leaders and community participants skilled in providing tutoring support to families and will result in uniformity among participating tutors.
